The Penarth Town Council is delighted to present to you, with the help of the Penarth Chamber of Trade & Commerce an extensive programme of events for the 2008 Penarth Summer Festival, culminating in a fantastic Festival Finale Day that will take place on the Saturday 12th July on the Esplanade in Penarth. The theme for the Festival and the Finale will be ‘Pirates of Penarth’.
The Penarth Chamber of Trade is organising a treasure trail for children around businesses in the town: the first prizes will be lead roles in the Finale Parade to be held on 12th July. The Chamber is also encouraging businesses to take part in a best dressed window competition based on the ‘Pirates of Penarth’ theme. |

| Get Involved |
|---|
| The Penarth Chamber of Trade has been assisting Penarth Town Council with the organisation and marketing of this year’s Summer Festival which is being themed as ‘The Pirates of Penarth’. As part of this we have organised two key opportunities for businesses to raise their profile by getting involved with the Festival. These are the Pirate Treasure Trail and the Best Dressed Pirate Window. |
|
| Businesses that want to take part need to complete and return this form no later than Friday 6 June. Space on the Treasure Trail is limited and entries will be offered on a first come first served basis. Whilst the Pirate Treasure Trail is open to all Penarth businesses, priority will be given to those businesses who are members of the Penarth Chamber of Trade. |
| The Festival Finale |
|---|
| The 12th July Festival Finale on the Esplanade will include craft and street traders, food and entertainment a plenty. Activities on the Esplanade are aimed at families and the more mature market.
The ‘Pirates of Penarth’ themed Festival Parade will take place at 5:45pm on July 12th and we would encourage everyone to come and take part, businesses, schools, pubs, groups and residents, adults and children alike can all take part in the fancy dress parade. Categories of entry will be announced in the Penarth Times and there will be cash prizes for winners. A new look programme of entertainment for the stage on the Esplanade on 12th July 2008 is planned and we are pleased to be able to announce that the hugely popular Copthorne Singers are to perform, along with Albert Road School Steel Pan Band, Penarth Brass Ensemble and Brickhouse. The activities on the 12th July will end with the usual much appreciated Firework Display. Penarth Youth Project, youth workers of church groups and the Vale Youth Service are staging a youth event at the Kymin to run parallel with the event on the Esplanade on 12th July 2008. There will be activities and competitions and musical entertainment especially for young people. |

| Pirate Treasure Trail |
|---|
| As part of the Penarth Chamber of Trade’s mission to promote support of local businesses, the Pirate Treasure Trail is aimed at encouraging people to visit Penarth shops and businesses whilst also helping to promote the Festival. The Pirate Treasure Trail is a competition aimed at families with children between the ages of 5 and 11. Two children will win the chance to be the Pirate King and Pirate Queen in the Summer Parade on Saturday 12 July.
In June, the Penarth Times will publish a full page Treasure Map with a list of clues leading to the treasure. Each participating business will be listed together with a clue. People taking part will need to visit the shop or business or visit their website in order to find the answer to the clue. Parents will be advised to accompany their children when they are looking for the answers to the clues. The clues should be pirate themed and it will be up to each business to decide how they wish to display the answer to their clue. For example, for a jeweller, the clue could be “What is the Pirate Queen’s favourite gem stone?” The answer might be in the window or on the website or people may have to come inside and either ask a member of staff or look for the answer on a sign or poster. Once people have collected the answers to all of the clues they will submit their entries and two winners will be selected from the correct entries. The winners will be provided with costumes to take part in the parade. |
